Sofi Tucker started selling Shea Nuts at the village market in Bonthe, Sierra Leone in 1912. By age 19, the widowed mother of four was selling Shea Butter, African Black Soap and her homemade hair and skin preparations all over the countryside. Sofi Tucker was our grandmother and SheaMoisture is her legacy.

Sustainability Commitments
SheaMoisture products are cruelty free. We do not test on animals, we are not affiliated with any companies which test on animals, and we do not sell in parts of the world that require animal testing. In fact, in most parts of the world there is a trend towards the banning of animal testing, so savvy ingredient suppliers have provided cruelty-free ingredients for many years now.
SheaMoisture bottles and jars are made of 25%-50% PCR resin (post-consumer recycled resin).

The African Black Soap Bamboo Charcoal Collection does an excellent job removing debris from the scalp and hair and provides a deep clean. The Collection can lift away pre-wash treatments, excess oil, and flakey build-up, while soothing the scalp. Another option for oily hair is the 100% Virgin Coconut Oil Collection, as it lifts away impurities and oil.
A method to determine your hair porosity is to perform the hair strand in a glass of water test. Fill a cup with room temperature water, grab loose strands of hair from different areas of your head and insert into the cup of water. If the hair strand sinks quickly to the bottom, you have high porosity hair. If your hair floats at the top of the water, you have low porosity, and if it slowly sinks you have normal to medium porosity.

All the SheaMoisture products are safe to use during pregnancy. Every SheaMoisture product is naturally scented and contains no chemicals such as petroleum, parabens, sulfates and phthalates. All SheaMoisture products are formulated without sulfates, phthalates, mineral oil, parabens and petroleum.

No, SheaMoisture is not vegan.
All of our products are sulfate free and safe for colour treated hair.
